Local grounds maintenance company supports transformative community green space project at NHS Tarentfort Centre

Countywide Kent has proudly contributed to the creation of the Tarentfort Nature Driveway, a groundbreaking community initiative that has transformed an underused area into a thriving green space designed for both biodiversity and therapeutic engagement.

The project, spearheaded by the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) in collaboration with the Human Nature Partnership (HNP), was made possible through funding from Natural England’s Seedcorn Programme.

Vicky Cooper, Energy & Environmental Compliance Manager for KMPT said: “As part of our Green Plan to enhance biodiversity across our estate, this project has proven immensely valuable for our patients, who have enjoyed participating in its design and creation.”

“It will support local nature conservation efforts by providing food and shelter for essential pollinators and bring positive wellbeing benefits for staff and patients, which is invaluable. We are deeply grateful to all our contracting partners and volunteers who helped turn this idea into reality.”

Countywide played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life by providing expert grounds maintenance support, facilitating cost-effective material procurement, and offering volunteer assistance to help patients and staff actively participate in the build.

“As experts in grounds maintenance, we were delighted to support this fantastic initiative,” reflected Andrew Orme, Regional Director of Countrywide Kent. “Not only does this project enhance biodiversity and local habitat connectivity, but it also provides a space where patients can engage in Green Social Prescribing, an increasingly recognised method of using nature-based activities to support mental health.”

Countywide’s contributions included vital ground preparation work to ensure the site was suitable for planting, access to wholesale purchasing for cost-efficient materials, and hands-on involvement in planting activities alongside staff and patients.

These efforts were instrumental in overcoming challenges such as tough ground conditions and ensuring the project was completed on time.

The Tarentfort Nature Driveway now features a variety of native plants, bug hotels, and log pile habitats, all designed to encourage wildlife while providing a tranquil, engaging environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The space is expected to have a long-lasting positive impact on the community by promoting wellbeing, fostering environmental awareness, and serving as a model for future green initiatives.
