8POINT3 LIGHTS THE WAY TO BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR COUNCIL OFFICES

8point3A Kent LED lighting manufacturer has won the contract to install one of its systems at Dover District Council’s offices thanks to its market leading retrofit service.

Dartford-based 8point3 manufactures and installs bespoke LED lighting systems for commercial and industrial clients who want to save up to 80 per cent of their energy costs and create a brighter, healthier working environment for staff.

8point3 submitted a successful bid for the contract to install a new system at Dover District Council’s head office at the White Cliffs Business Park, and worked with the council in order to ensure that the lamps could be easily installed by the authority’s caretakers, saving the Council considerable labour costs.

“The offices are over two floors and had quite low ceilings,” said Terry John, Technical Specification Manager at 8point3. “From our initial surveys, it was clear that the ceilings had been changed quite significantly to accommodate the existing lighting grid, which used two different sizes of fittings.

“Further, because of the way the recessed canopies had been fitted to the ceiling support structure, installing anything other than like-for-like replacement fittings would prove to be a major job, causing considerable disruption to the staff using the offices.”

8point3 designed and built a bespoke geartray which would not only fit the two different sizes of existing trough, avoiding the need to disturb the ceiling layout, but also supplied it complete with a flying lead and matched the existing plug arrangement to make installation as quick, clean and easy as possible for the client.

“The system was future-proofed by providing the plug with a five-way wiring facility to accommodate future upgrades for dimming and maintained emergency functions,” added Terry.

“Two prototypes were produced, fitted and successfully trialled prior to the client placing their order so they knew exactly what they were going to receive.”

Martin Legatt, Assets and Building Control Consultancy Manager at Dover District Council said: “We were looking for a lighting system to improve on the current basic system, to deliver energy savings, to reduce costs and to reduce carbon emissions. We awarded 8point3 the contract to install a new lighting system as it provided us with an efficient and straightforward solution.”

Working predominantly with Philips Lumileds using world-leading LUXEON (TM) chips, 8point3 designs and manufactures components that are tuned to optimise lumen output whilst ensuring power characteristics afford the highest energy savings and to ensure longevity.

The company’s product ranges provide an equivalent light output and distribution in line with the fittings they are replacing, meaning minimum disruption to the customer’s business when carrying out the installation.

Customers typically record energy savings of between 50-80% against equivalent traditional lights and significantly reduce the amount of CO2 generated by their organisation.

With an expected guaranteed economic usable life of 50,000 hours, the absence of routine maintenance and re-lamping costs further add to the benefits of this unique technology.

8point3 typically specifies a daylight white colour for its office LED solutions with an emitted light colour around 5,000 Kelvin – equivalent to noon daylight on a sunny day. The colour temperature is the same as that used in lamps to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
